GISH production of “Big Fish” earns outstanding awards at upcoming state showcase

Big Fish the musical

Grand Island Senior High’s production of “Big Fish” is making a splash across the state!

The Islanders earned 2022-2023 Outstanding Musical Theater Production and Outstanding Ensemble from the Nebraska High School Theater Academy.

Islanders will be honored at the annual Awards Showcase event at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, June 4 at the Orpheum Theater. The event is a red carpet, Tony Awards style showcase.

For Outstanding Musical Theater Production, up to 10 high schools and 2 middle schools will be honored at the Showcase. Winners are determined through the adjudication process. High school winners are invited to perform a number from their musical as a part of the showcase.

For Outstanding Ensemble Performance, up to 10 high schools and 2 middle schools will be honored as well. Winners are determined through the adjudication process by attending performances of the shows at the schools that apply to be adjudicated.

Two GISH students who played leads in “Big Fish,” Hannah Madison and Emily Reimers, will also represent the Islanders in the award show’s ensemble performance.

GISH Drama Teacher Christine Kier said it is an honor to have students perform and be recognized at the showcase.

“We are extremely proud of our students and their hard work and commitment to the show ‘Big Fish’,” Kier said. “They are now being rewarded for their work. It is the equivalent of earning a berth at a State competition in athletics,” she said.

Take a bow, Islanders!
