2160 - Policy On Policy Adoption and Implementation

The Grand Island Public Schools Board of Education will periodically review, update, and approve GIPS Board of Education Policies. It shall be the responsibility of the superintendent to keep the board informed as to legal changes at both the federal and state levels. The superintendent or designee shall be responsible for bringing proposed policy statement revisions to the board’s attention.

 

The policies developed by the Board of Education and the administrative regulations or procedures developed to implement all policies and designed to ensure an effective and efficient school systems. Suggested additions, deletions and modifications to existing policies and regulations are welcomed form employees, students, and the interested public.

 

The adoption of board policies shall follow the sequence below, except for policy actions to be taken on emergency measures. Policy adoption requires at least two regular meetings of the Board of Education and may include a special meeting when needed:

 

  • Collect information on the need for policy and feedback from staff directly connected to the policy
  • Review by the Board Policy Committee and recommendation to the Board
  • Announcement and distribution of the proposed policy as an agenda item at a regular or special meeting of the Board of Education
  • Received at a first reading of the policy document subject to further review by school district officials and members of the community
  • Discussions and final action by the Board at its next or subsequent meeting.
  • If a policy is revised because of a legal change over which the board has no control or a change that is minor, the policy may be approved at one meeting at the discretion of the board

 

Prior to enactment, all policy proposals shall be titled and coded as appropriate to the subject and in conformance with the codification system used in Board policy. All policies are maintained in an online repository on the district website. 

All GIPS administrators are responsible for dissemination and implementation of policies.
