Hubbard Named Next GISH Principal
January 31st, 2024
We are pleased to announce that Mr. Calvin Hubbard will be moving into a new leadership role within the district! Hubbard will be serving as the new Principal at Grand Island Senior High starting this summer. We are always excited when opportunities to advance within the district come to fruition.
Mr. Hubbard has been a proven, positive educator in the district since 2002. Hubbard joined GIPS as a Science Teacher at Walnut Middle School and served in that role (between active military duties) until 2010. Stepping into leadership roles, Hubbard also served as Middle School Dean of Students for three years before serving as Assistant Principal at Walnut Middle School in 2014. In 2019, he joined Senior High as the Assistant Principal. Throughout his time at GISH Hubbard has led student services efforts, managed the high school safety and security team, supported culture and climate efforts, and more.
Seaking about taking the helm at one of Nebraska’s largest High Schools, Hubbard shared:
“I am really excited to step into this position. I have had the privilege to serve Islander students, staff, and stakeholders over the last 4 years in building strong foundations for success. I believe the experiences I have had in my various roles in GIPS have prepared me to lead Grand Island Senior High as we continue to transform and elevate our Academies. We are in a great place right now and I intend to work and collaborate with everyone to keep the momentum going!”
As a supportive educator, Mr. Hubbard has been a consistent champion of student success and safety and instructional support. Those who have worked with him understand his commitment to seeing students achieve great things. The collaboration and leadership he brings will be a great fit at GISH.
Mr. Hubbard will assume his new Principal role this summer as Mr. Jeff Gilbertson, current GISH Executive Principal, will be retiring at the end of the school year.
To see our home-grown leaders continue making an impact and advancing within the district remains a source of great pride for GIPS.
Mr. Matt Fisher, GIPS Superintendent, affirmed the hire:
“Mr. Hubbard has shown himself to be a strong educational leader while he has served in different roles in the GIPS district. We know his commitment to our students and staff runs deep. We are excited to see how his leadership continues to keep Grand Island Senior High moving in a great direction.”
What’s next?
The district will turn its focus on interviewing qualified candidates for the GISH Activities Director position. As Mrs. Cindy Wells, current GISH A.D., is also set to retire at the end of the school year, Mr. Hubbard will be poised to facilitate that process.
Once that process is complete, the district intends to share a timeline for filling Hubbard’s current position as Assistant Principal at GISH. More details will be available in the coming weeks.
We are excited to see what the future holds for Mr. Hubbard and Islander Nation!
