Welcome to Grand Island Public Schools
Welcome to the Grand Island Public Schools website. Our staff has worked to make this interface as customer friendly as possible. Whether you are seeking information regarding our curriculum, or are interested in learning about a particular school's activity calendar, you will find it here. Please take time to explore the site as we are continually striving to include content that is of interest to our parents, community members and potential residents.
We are very proud of our outstanding record of academic excellence. In October, 2009, all of our schools (14 elementary schools, 3 middle schools and a 9-12 high school) were awarded "Adequate Yearly Progress" status through the state and federal accountability process. This acknowledgement is due to a focused curriculum, outstanding staff with high levels of training in instructional strategies, and organizational goals that place academic achievement as our highest priority. Each year our achievement numbers increase and the achievement gap decreases. We will continue to be tenacious in our resolve to help kids learn and apply their learning.
Grand Island Public Schools is also blessed with a growing enrollment and modern facilities to accommodate the number of new students. We have benefitted from dramatically increased state and federal resources and a commitment from our policymakers to help develop interventions that will help students become more successful. Our budget is designed to distribute funds to the classroom as we have successfully lowered class sizes in our K-3 classrooms to under 20.
Grand Island Senior High competes at the highest level of academic and extra-curricular competition in our state. With the potential to earn 36 college credits without ever leaving our campus, many of our students receive scholarships to top colleges and universities in the state, region and country. Our fine arts and athletic programs attract students desiring to measure themselves against the best in Nebraska.
We appreciate your interest in and support of our schools and welcome your visit at any time. Please feel free to contact us if any further questions arise as you begin the important task of choosing a school for your child or if you are weighing the many positive attributes of a growing and progressive city.
Dr. Steve Joel, Superintendent of Schools

H1N1 Virus Information
As you may know, flu can be easily spread from person to person. Therefore, we are taking steps to reduce the spread of flu in Grand Island Public Schools. We want to keep the school open to students and functioning in a normal manner during this flu season. We need your help to do this.
We are working closely with the Grand Island Public Schools Health Services and the Central District Health Department to monitor flu conditions and make decisions about the best steps to take concerning schools. We will keep you updated with new information as it becomes available.
