A familiar face is set to lead activities at Grand Island Senior High (GISH).

GISH has named Chris Ladwig the new Activities Director starting in the summer of 2024.  A veteran educator and leader in the district, Ladwig has been with Grand Island Public Schools (GIPS) since 2010.

The announcement comes after long-time administrator, coach, and Activities Director, Mrs. Cindy Wells, shared she will be retiring at the end of the school year

Mr. Ladwig has served as the GISH Assistant Activities Director in a part-time capacity, along with teaching, since 2010.  He moved to serving as Assistant A.D. in a full-time capacity starting in 2022.  In that role he has helped support and shape the continued excellence of Islander programs along with coordinating health education efforts across the district.  Ladwig was also named the Nebraska State Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NSIAAA) Assistant Athletic Director of the year for the 2022-23 school year. Prior to serving as Assistant A.D. Ladwig has taught PE, Health, and Freshman Seminar at the elementary and high school levels.

Looking ahead Ladwig is excited to be the next in line to lead the storied GISH Activities Department.

“It is an honor and privilege to serve as the next Activities Director.” Ladwig said, “I would like to thank the committee for this opportunity. I am committed to continue building the Islander brand for our students, teachers, and coaches. I have had the pleasure to learn from Mrs. Wells and am excited to continue the rich tradition of Grand Island Senior High Activities.”

As the school year finishes-up, the plan is for Mr. Ladwig to assume the director role this summer.  Current director Cindy Wells will help ensure a smooth transition as she prepares for her well-deserved retirement.

Matt Fisher, GIPS Superintendent, affirmed the hire.

“We are excited to have Mr. Ladwig move into this position.” Fisher shared, “After having the chance to work side-by-side with Mrs. Wells for a number of years, we know he is well prepared to step in and lead in this role.”

Grand Island Public Schools and Islander Nation are excited to see Mr. Ladwig thrive in this role!
