2020 Summer Strength & Conditioning Plan

THE PLAN: STUDENTS BEGIN VOLUNTARY TRAINING MONDAY, JUNE 1

The plan is for high school athletes to start voluntary training at GIPS facilities in assigned small groups organized by the athletic department starting Monday, June 1. In order to make the plan work safely for students and staff, the plan will utilize the weight rooms at GISH and those at Walnut and Westridge middle schools. Students have been organized into team-based groups of 10 or less by coaches. A schedule has been developed to maximize the space and the time to safely allow for as many student athletes to take part as possible. Coaches will confirm with students when they are scheduled to attend and where.

Face covering is to be worn at all times, unless when directly instructed by coaches to remove them.

THINGS TO CONSIDER: RISK INVOLVED FOR STUDENTS & HOUSEHOLD

With COVID-19, no plan will completely prevent the spread of the virus. The district has consulted many outside resources in developing the plan and guidelines. GIPS leaders have been in contact with colleagues across the area and throughout the state to find the best solutions for local Grand Island students. They have also talked frequently with local doctors. Parents should consider the risks involved for their individual household, including:

  • Does the student have a compromised health condition?
  • Does a member of the household have a compromised health condition?

Students and guardians will be required to sign a waiver before athlete can take part in summer activities.

SAFETY GUIDELINES: BEFORE, DURING & AFTER TRAINING

All student athletes will be expected to follow these guidelines:

BEFORE

  • If not feeling well, stay home.
  • Wash hands before leaving home.
  • Come to designated location alone (carpooling is strongly discouraged).
  • Students are to bring their own water bottle filled with water. Water fountains will not be used.
  • Arrive on time. Do not arrive earlier than instructed by coach.
  • Arrive wearing a mask/face covering.
  • Students will be screened daily upon arrival for COVID-19 symptoms.

DURING

  • Students are to follow all instructions of coaches during training.
  • Mask/face covering is to be worn at all times, unless specifically instructed by coaches.
  • Students will be expected to clean equipment as instructed by coaches.
  • Students will respect social distancing expectations as instructed by coaches.

AFTER

  • Students will be expected to clean equipment when finished.
  • Students should leave immediately as instructed by coaches. No congregating outside building waiting for a ride.
  • Students are expected to shower upon arriving at home.
  • Students are expected to wash workout clothes daily upon returning home.

Failure to follow guidelines may result in immediate exclusion and/or program ending for everyone.
