A familiar face will be re-joining the Grand Island Public Schools!

GIPS is pleased to share that Mr. Virgil Harden will return to the district to serve as Chief Financial Officer starting in July of 2023.

Folks may recall he proudly served as the GIPS CFO for 21 years from 1999-2021 before stepping away for a couple years. Harden has spent the last two years leading the financial offices of Third City Church in Grand Island.

Mr. Matt Fisher, GIPS Interim Superintendent, affirmed his return:

“Mr. Harden has long been regarded as one of the best school finance leaders across the state. His knowledge and skills will be invaluable as the financial future of the district is being planned. We feel very fortunate to have him rejoin the GIPS team.”

Set to once again serve the school district he called home for over 21 years, Mr. Harden shared his appreciation for the opportunity to rejoin the work and environment he has missed:

"I'm excited to be rejoining the GIPS team in focusing on the great things happening in classrooms for students, their families, and the community! Supporting that work with the rest of the business office team members has always been rewarding. It will be great to be back!"

This transition comes at the heels of Dr. Ken Schroeder set to return to Ravenna Public Schools to serve as their Superintendent.

Naturally, stepping back into the CFO role is familiar territory for Harden. Throughout his time serving GIPS Harden became an influential leader in the arena of school finance across the state. Having his level of expertise, experience, and passion for public education is an exciting homecoming for Grand Island Public Schools!

Welcome back, Mr. Harden!
