Early Entry Kindergarten

Grand Island Public Schools recognizes that students should enter school ready to learn and socialize with the children and adults in their environment. Readiness for school entry is key to continued student success. 

What follows is the district process for Early Entry Kindergarten.


To be eligible, your child must turn 5 years of age between Aug. 1 and Oct. 15. Children who are good candidates for this process are those who demonstrate academic achievement as well as social, emotional and physical maturity appropriate for kindergarten placement.

How to Participate:

  • Obtain a packet with an application from your neighborhood school or the Kneale Administration building after Feb. 22, 2022
  • Fill out the application and return it to the Kneale Building at 123 S. Webb Rd by March 18, 2022
  • There is no charge for this assessment. A letter will be sent with the date and time of your child’s scheduled appointment.

  • To determining readiness for early entry kindergarten, your child will be assessed on:
    • Motor skills (skipping, jumping, cutting, writing)
    • Conceptual skills (knowledge of colors, counting)
    • Language skills (knowledge of letters and words, problem-solving ability
  • Trained teachers will conduct the assessment, which typically lasts between 45-60 minutes.

Testing Day:

  • You and your child should arrive at the Kneale Administration Building 5 minutes prior to the scheduled time. You will be asked to wait outside in the hallway while your child is taking the assessment in a nearby room.
  • A screening and temperature check will be completed outside of entrance O before entering the building.
  • Masks will be required for both you and your child, and must be worn inside the building at all times except during portions of assessment as directed by the test administrator.
  • Only one parent and the child being assessed may enter the building. You will need to remain onsite the entire time your child is being tested.
  • Your child will participate in hand washing/sanitizing as directed by the test administrator.


  • A letter will be sent to you with the results no later than May 15.
  • If your child is eligible for early entrance kindergarten, you as the parent make the final decision to register the child for kindergarten. If he or she is eligible, there is no requirement for the child to attend kindergarten in the fall.
