Inaugural GISH Atheltic Hall of Fame class announced

Grand Island Senior High Activities Director Cindy Wells has announced the 2018 inductees into the Grand Island Senior High Athletic Hall of Fame.

“We are excited to honor the first class to our Athletic Hall of Fame,” Wells said. “This is a great representation of the rich tradition of high-quality athletes, male and female, at Grand Island Senior High. We have generations of championship teams and individual athletes who’ve reached the pinnacle of their sport. Great coaches and contributors have helped these student-athletes through the decades and we are pleased to recognize them.”

The inductees are:

  • Boys Basketball: Wes Wilkinson & Paul Trieschman
  • Girls Basketball: Kelli Benson Jeffries
  • Wrestling: Andrew Riedy
  • Boys Swimming: Scott Usher
  • Girls Swimming: Melanie Jacob
  • Volleyball: Ann Armes & Jeri Walkowiak
  • Boys Soccer: Logan Mendez
  • Boys Track: Tom Millsap
  • Girls Golf: J.C. Stevenson
  • Girls Tennis: Tammy Wang
  • Softball: Heidi Foland
  • Baseball: Jeff Richardson
  • Boys Gymnastics: Tony Burtle
  • Coaches: Rod Shada (Wrestling) & Ed Bills (Girls Basketball)
  • Teams: 1979 Girls Basketball & 2002 Boys Basketball

The inductees will be recognized at halftime of the Jan. 26 Islander boys basketball game against Lincoln Northeast. The game begins at 7 p.m. following the girls game at 5:15 p.m.

A banquet honoring the inductees at Balz Banquet Hall, 213 N. Sycamore St., is set for 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27. Tickets for the banquet are $20 and are available at the GISH Activities Office. Remaining tickets will also be available at the door.

The Athletic Hall of Fame board members include Dan Thayer, Kelli Jeffries, Vic Nelson, Will Armstrong, Kristin Maser, Cindy Wells, Bobby Mills, Jeff Gilbertson and Megan Richardson.
