Tracy Morrow was surprised Tuesday morning during an all-school assembly with a wonderful gift: She was given the 2017 Kim West Dinsdale Excellence in Teaching Award from the Grand Island Community Foundation. The award comes with a $5,000 check for Morrow.

"I am living my dream of being a teacher," Morrow told the students after receiving the award. She teaches fourth- and fifth-grade newcomers at West Lawn Elementary.

Founded in 2005, this award honors kindergarten through 12th-grade teachers from any school in Hall County, public or private, who demonstrate an exceptional love for and quality in teaching. The winner is chosen from nominations submitted by current and former students, parents of students, colleagues, principals, administrators, family and friends. Nominations included reference letters and a two-page essay detailing reasons why the teacher serves as a shining example of educational excellence to include: command of subject field, ability to inspire students and develop student character, outstanding contributions to school or education and service beyond normal teaching duties.

Morrow joins a list of excellent teachers to win the award:
