Meet the GEAR UP team


The Grand Island Public Schools GEAR UP PROMISE team has some new faces this 2020-2021 year. Meet each of the new team members who are dedicated to helping the Class of 2024 and 2025 succeed.


Dr. Allison J. Bailey, Director 

Ed.D. Educational Leadership, Argosy University; M.Certificate Geosciences, University of West Georgia; M.A. Speech Communication, University of Louisiana at Monroe; B.A. English Education, University of Louisiana at Monroe

Her office is located at the Kneale Administration Building. She has been an educator for more than 20 years, including both the high school and university level. Dr. Bailey has taught courses in communication, environmental studies, geographic information systems, and geography. In addition, she has managed many grants on the state and federal level.

 

“I am excited to be part of Grand Island Public Schools GEAR UP program because I believe that all students can achieve their goals,” Dr. Bailey said.


Denise Dory, Administrative Assistant

Denise’s office is located at the Kneale Administration Building. She was part of the nation’s first Head Start Program class in 1964. She is a 1980 graduate of Grand Island Senior High, and also attended Lincoln Elementary and Walnut Middle School. Her family has also grown through GIPS. 


“I’m excited to be part of the GEAR UP team and work to help our students,” Denise said.


Asia Berg, Academic Advisor

Masters in Science Education in School Counseling, Wayne State College (2021); Bachelors of Science in Sport Management, Wayne State College, Associates in Science in Elementary Education, Northeast Community College

Asia’s office will be located at Grand Island Senior High. Asia was previously the Family College and Career Financial Specialist, but has stepped into this new role. She is a first generation college student and attended Wayne State College for sport management and coaching. Asia is currently working on earning her Master’s degree in school counseling from Wayne State College.


“One thing I’m looking forward to is getting back to school and working with all of our students,” Asia said.

 

César Durán, Site Coordinator

Higher Education Student Affairs Master of Science in Education, Organizational and Relational Communications Bachelor of Science, University of Nebraska Kearney

César’s office is located at Barr Middle School. He attended the University of Nebraska at Kearney. He started his professional career in Kearney before moving to Grand Island to be part of the GEAR UP team. 


“I am passionate about the opportunities that education opens, and I’m here and committed to help our students learn about those opportunities,” César said. 

 

Augusta Beahm, Academic Coach

STEAM (Science, Technology, Art, Engineering, Math)

School Administration 7-12 Wayne State College (July 2021), Masters of Arts in Teaching in Physics & Chemistry from Hastings College, Bachelors of Arts in Biology from Hastings College


Augusta, who goes by Gus, is located at Grand Island Senior High. She taught high school chemistry and biology for 17 years at Hastings Public Schools before joining the GEAR UP team in 2020. She said she is excited to get to know lots of new people and to work with students. 


“Because I passionately believe in nurturing a love of science, I am committed to helping students find that spark of inquiry,” Gus said.

 

Mayra Ortiz, College Financial Advisor

Masters in Science Education in School Counseling, University of Nebraska at Kearney (May 2023); Bachelors of Science Double Major in Family Studies and Spanish Translation Interpretation, University of Nebraska at Kearney


Mayra’s office is located at Walnut Middle School. She attended the University of Nebraska at Kearney. She was an interpreter for Kearney Public Schools and worked at the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services as a case worker before joining the GEAR UP team. 


“I’m looking forward to providing the students and their families with the resources necessary to succeed with their plans in higher education,” Mayra said.


Shalee Lindsey, Academic Coach - ELA (English Language Arts)

Master’s Degree in Literacy (K-12 Reading Specialist) from Concordia University; Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Hastings College


Shalee’s office is located at Grand Island Senior High. She has been an educator for 20 years. She has been part of the GIPS family for 14 years. Shalee taught seventh grade language arts and 21st Century Literacy at Westridge Middle School for 12 years before joining the GEAR UP team. 


“I’m very excited to be part of the GEAR UP team and helping students understand the importance of reading, while also helping them develop an appreciation and passion for reading,” Shalee said.
