The Grand Island Public Schools Preschool Program is dedicated to providing three to five-year-old children with a foundation for school success! Our preschool program provides a nurturing and caring environment that develops each child’s potential for learning through a balanced approach, which includes age-appropriate, individually-appropriate, and culturally and linguistically-appropriate practices.

The Early Learning Center is located in the former Engleman Elementary School building on Capital Avenue. Classrooms and student areas are located on the first floor of the building and in the modular in back of the school. Offices are located on the second floor of the building.

Our Curriculum

Preschool teachers will provide opportunities for learning in mathematics, language and literacy, science, health and physical development, creative arts, and social/emotional development.

The Grand Island Public Schools Preschool Program utilizes an "active learning" approach. Children have direct, hands-on experiences with people, objects, events, and ideas.

Classrooms follow a predictable sequence of events known as the daily routine. The daily routine includes the following components:

  • Greeting time
  • Large group/small group time
  • Planning time, work time, clean-up time, recall time
  • Breakfast time (morning classes) and lunch time (afternoon classes)
  • Indoor/outdoor play time (Preschoolers will play outside as weather permits and if the "feels like" temperature is 32 degrees or above.)

The inclusion of preschoolers with differing abilities and from diverse cultures enhances learning opportunities for all children about caring, acceptance, and interdependence with others.

If you do not have this sign, you will be required to drive around to the front of the building and go inside the main entrance to the front office to sign out your child. You will also be asked for proper identification before the child is released into your care.
