Welcome to Barr Middle School

Barr Middle School

Barr parents and guardians,
We’d like to welcome you all to the 2019-2020 school year!  This is going to be an exciting year filled with learning, connections, celebrations, and success.  Our staff, teachers, and principals have been hard at work this summer and we are ecstatic for classes to resume!

As part of this welcome back, we would like to take the opportunity to inform you of some upcoming, exciting new initiatives in our building, and also to tell you more about how we plan to continue to personalize your child’s MIDDLE SCHOOL EXPERIENCE.

At Barr Middle School, our goal is to help your child reach their full potential.  To accomplish this, we will be focusing on your child’s academic growth, as well as their connection to school, through differentiated academic support, individualized scheduling, clear expectations, and many opportunities before, during, and after school for them to grow as individuals.  We are excited to partner with you to further enhance this MIDDLE SCHOOL EXPERIENCE for your child.  Here are some of the exciting new initiatives for this upcoming year that will help us reach these goals:

We had great success meeting goals and reaching new heights academically last year thanks to our focus on growth.  We will continue to have this focus on reading, math, and other content areas. In addition, starting this school year our schedule will have a few changes.  For example, Science, Social Studies, and Explore classes will each be 43 minute periods. Math and English Language Arts will be BLOCK, and take up two 43 minute periods each.  Our students and teachers will be able to use this extended time to meet state standards and expand their learning to be better prepared than ever before.

WIN Time:

What I Need Time is a structured time at the end of each day used for reviewing concepts, previewing new content, and enrichment.  Your student will be able to make some choices about attending WIN sessions that benefit them and are of interest to them.  Teachers will be able to request that students attend certain sessions based on EACH STUDENT’S NEED. This will provide an even more individual learning experience for your child, and all students.

Bulldog Time (Home Room):

Paired with WIN Time at the end of the day, Bulldog Time will be an opportunity each day to connect students with a teacher advocate.  The goal of Bulldog Time is to give your student a “home base” and person who can be their “go to” in any situation. Bulldog Time will also give us a place to work on many academic and real-world skills, social-emotional learning, college and career planning, and more.  You will get to know your child’s Bulldog Time teacher well and our hope is that he/she can also be a “go to” person for you as well.

The Bulldog Way (Positive Behavior System)

Our staff worked hard last school year to create a Positive Behavior System for our students.  This system will turn our three school rules (Be Safe, Be Respectful, and Be Responsible) into PILLARS of behavior expectations.  From each of those pillars, we have established more detailed behavior expectations for different areas and settings in our school, in order to ensure more clarity on expectations for students.  We will spend more time teaching building-wide expectations, coupled with praise and rewarding positive behavior, as well as using these expectations to correct unwanted behavior. This system will make it easier for students to be successful and we are eager to celebrate student positive behavior!

One of our favorite (and student’s favorite) parts of attending school is seeing them participate in extracurricular activities.  We will continue to offer interscholastic sports to 7th and 8th grade students which include volleyball, football, cross country, wrestling, basketball, track, and soccer.  Along with these sports we also offer many clubs and activities for your student. We have special interest clubs like Roots and Shoots, Science Quiz Bowl, and Photography Club.  We also offer several clubs created by kids based on their interests and hobbies, such as the Finger Skateboard Club, the Spooky Boys Club, the Gaming Club, and more! Our goal with Expanded Learning Opportunities (ELOs), or clubs, is to give your child a place to connect with others, while enjoying things that interest them, and expanding their learning which will connect to the classroom.

Again, we are SO excited for your child to return to the halls of Barr Middle School.  We want to invite you to join us to learn more about these initiatives, receive your child’s schedule, meet their teachers and new staff members, learn about our Barr Parent Advisory Committee, join a club, and more at our:

*Barr Middle School Open House, on Wednesday, August 14, from 5:30-7:00 PM*

Thank you for your commitment to our building and your partnership in education.

 See you soon!
