Grand Island Senior High offers a strong program in the visual arts. The facilities are exemplary. Studios are well equipped for exploration in 2D (drawing, design, painting and printmaking), 3D (ceramics and sculpture) and graphic design (computer lab).

Our department boasts having an art gallery for showing student and guest artist work in a professional setting.

Graduates of our program are well prepared for continuing their studies of fine art, applied art and crafts on a college level and have foundational knowledge for the workforce in art-related careers. Graduates of the class of 2014 have declared majors in art-related careers at Nebraska Wesleyan University, Hastings College, the Creative Center, Central Community College, the University of Nebraska Lincoln and Kearney campuses, Kansas State University and the Savannah School of Art and Design.

Students actively have their art accepted in many shows and competitions. Artwork produced by our students is well represented in shows such as the Nebraska Scholastics Art Awards, the National Scholastics Art Awards, the NATA student art show and the Nebraska Wesleyan Bridge Exhibition. You will also find student artwork in galleries and businesses in Grand Island, including the Bartenbach galleries, Stuhr Museum, Prairie Winds, Riverside Country Club, the Nebraska State Fair and Starbucks.

We augment our instruction by touring artist's studios, having artists-in-residences, visiting galleries in Omaha and participating in global, collaborative art projects. Students have visited internationally acclaimed Jun Kaneko's studio. Guest artists have worked with students in residency programs. Advanced art students tour a number of art museums and galleries in Omaha to discern between the missions of these art venues. Students have made large scale, outdoor installations. We have been partners in the One Million Bones Project and the Inside/Out project. Some of these special events have been made possible by the support of the Grand Island Educational Foundation, The Moonshell Arts Council and the Nebraska Arts Council.

Enjoy touring the art galleries on the Visual Arts page to see work produced by our students in the various courses of study. You will also find photos from special events our students participate in, and a new feature - a blog for students and instructors to write about their art adventures.
