WHAT MAKES ME ME?

All of my life experiences up to this point.

Growing up in small-town Nebraska — Shickley, NE, population: 350 — I learned a lot of the lessons and values that shape who I am. My parents, particularly my father, had a big impact on who I am. He taught me the importance of hard work, family, faith and so many other things. Losing him when I was 30 years old was really tough, but the lessons he taught me are the same lessons that I am teaching my kids (Lucy, 6, and Levi, 4) today.

Something else that's kind of cool about growing up in small-town Nebraska is that I knew everyone in town. This taught me the valuable lesson that everyone has a story; something that makes them unique.

As I work with students and teachers, I always try to remember that it's super important to ask questions and find out who people really are. I think it's really fun when experiences from my past connect with experiences that students are having. I also really enjoy hearing about the unique experiences that people have that are totally unrelatable for me.

The most impactful life lesson I learned from my father is that caring for and taking care of people is more important than anything else we do in life. This lesson resounds with me each and every day and helps make me, me.
