Freshman Experience

“I think the Academy of Freshman Exploration helps freshman with the future. It helps with resumes, future interviews, colleges and more.”
Emily Sileuangthong, Class of 2022, JROTC, Student Council

Experience Senior High: Exploration!

Ninth-grade students begin their Grand Island Senior High experience in the Academy of Freshman Exploration to promote an effective and positive transition from middle school to high school. This academy is designed to help students adjust to high school expectations, routines and standards in a supportive, nurturing environment. The ninth-grade instructional program also includes a Freshman Seminar course designed to equip students with the study and social skills they will need to succeed in high school, and to motivate them through exploration of their individual talents and college and career-awareness activities.

Freshmen will take a full slate of core classes - English, math, science, social studies and PE/health. Additionally, students will have two electives per semester. Students will have many classes to choose from for electives, including fine arts, world languages, weight lifting and more.

During this year, freshmen will explore their interests and passions while learning about the opportunities in the other five academies and where they think they will best fit. At the same time, they will gain a number of experiences to help start thinking about life after high school, ensuring they have available options to thrive once they graduate.

Comments from the first class of students in the Academy of Freshman Exploration:

“I think the academies are working out great. Deciding where you want to go to college or picking a career is a stressful idea. Going on college visits and choosing a pathway as a freshman is a good start. It gives us more time to think about important decisions in our life. In my opinion starting to look into colleges now helps because I want to be able to pick the best option for me to make my life successful. Having a class directed towards what we do after high school, in my opinion, is what every student needs. It makes deciding less stressful and more thought through.”
Americas LaBenz

“Something that stands out to me in the Academy of Freshman Exploration is how all the teachers in your team are connected and they talk to each other when you need help and they will figure something out and it will be for the best.”
Leizer Chi Acosta

“I enjoy how the Academy of Freshman Exploration gives me ideas of what I want to do in the future and it helps me get one percent better everyday.”
Ariel Hernandez Monterola

“Many of the things that I have been able to experience in the Academy of Freshman Exploration have been very valuable. The mock interviews were good to experience to see what to expect from a job interview. The UNL visit was also useful to see what a college looks like and how things work.”
Mariah Rivera

“I like how the program is preparing us for college. They give us many opportunities, like going to UNL.”
Mentheep John

“I like my Freshman Seminar class because it gives us more information on what our future is going to look like.”
Malina Khanthavixay

“I think the Academy of Freshman Exploration has benefited all of us because we have a team of teachers we can get to know and we can go on trips as a class. It has been great to do stuff as a team and I think it is a great thing for the future.”

“My favorite thing about the Academy of Freshman Exploration is all the teachers, because they try their best to help us with our work, and what to do to earn higher grades and the teachers here are nice.”
Deven Martinez
