2160 – Policy On Policy Adoption

The Grand Island Board of Education will periodically review, update, and approve GIPS Board of Education Policies. It shall be the responsibility of the superintendent to keep the board informed as to legal changes at both the federal and state levels. The superintendent or designee shall be responsible for bringing proposed policy statement revisions to the board’s attention.

The adoption of board policies shall follow the sequence below, except for policy actions to be taken on emergency measures. Policy adoption requires at least at two regular meetings, which may include a special meeting, of the Board of Education:

  1. Announcement and distribution of the proposed policy as an agenda item at a regular or special meeting of the Board of Education.
  2. Received at a first reading of the policy document subject to further review by school district officials and members of the community.
  3. Discussions and final action by the Board at its next or subsequent meeting.
  4. If a policy is revised because of a legal change over which the board has no control or a change that is minor, the policy may be approved at one meeting at the discretion of the board.

Prior to enactment, all policy proposals shall be titled and coded as appropriate to the subject and in conformance with the codification system used in Board policy. All policies will be maintained in an online repository on the district website.
