GISH FCCLA chapter earns success at state tournament

In its first year as a chapter, the Grand Island Senior High School Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) chapter achieved immense success at the state competition.

Two students, Ryan Sodomka and Clark Boettger, were named state champions and will move on to the national competition. They competed in Focus on Children Level 2. Their presentation was centered on the importance of music education in child development. Both conducted research and traveled to West Lawn Elementary School to do activities with the first-graders.

Kia Clark and Emily Evans earned state runner-up and will also move on to the national competition. They competed in Chapter in Review Portfolio Level 2. Their PowerPoint presentation explained the work produced by the chapter throughout the year, which was connected to college and career readiness.

Isabella Mora received fourth place in professional presentation. She competed in Professional Presentation Level 2. Her presentation on empathy focused on ending the stigma of mental illness.

"For me, it's amazing to see what these kids did and how much heart they put into their projects," said FCCLA adviser Michelle Irvine. "I thought they'd be successful but this amount of success in their first year is outstanding. Me and the other two advisers couldn't be more proud of them."

All competitions were virtual this year, including the upcoming national tournament.

Competitors are required to present something they did outside of the competition to the judges and connect that experience to the competition criteria.
