GISH senior organizing blood drive on April 9

A service project turned into a bigger passion for Ella McDonald.

The Grand Island Senior High senior is organizing her third blood drive with the Red Cross, which will be from noon to 6 p.m. on Friday, April 9 at the Grand Island VFW.

The first blood drive Ella organized was in August. She organized the first blood drive for a service project for National Honor Society.

“However, after hosting the first drive and donating blood for the first time, I realized it was something that was 100% worth my time,” Ella, who is in the Academy of Medical Sciences, said. “This is something that had a deep purpose and could help a lot of people,” she said.

Ella said that’s why she continues to organize blood drives: to help people. She said the pandemic makes the need for blood donations greater.

“With the pandemic, blood is in such short supply that all donations are very deeply appreciated,” Ella said.

Anyone who would like to donate blood on April 9 at the Grand Island VFW for Ella’s blood drive can sign up by emailing emcdonald@gips.org with their first and last name, email address, and their preferred time to donate. Donation slots are available every 15 minutes from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.
