GISH’s Josiah Rose earns Nebraska Young Artist Award

Josiah Rose, a junior at Grand Island Senior High, won a Nebraska Young Artist Award from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts.

Sixty-nine students from more than 30 high schools across the state have been selected as award winners. Applications were received from 115 students across Nebraska.

The awards recognize 11th-grade students from Nebraska for their talents in visual art, dance, music, theatre, and film and emerging media arts. Josiah specializes in visual arts.

Spider chairThe piece Josiah submitted for this award was a black spider chair with legs made out of PVC pipe. The custom wooden chair is covered in black fur that is mounted on a dowel in the PVC pipe.

Josiah said he plans to study architecture in the future, and the Nebraska Young Artist Award will help set him apart.

“This award is important to me because since I am going into architecture, colleges will want someone who is experienced in art, and if I have art awards on my resume, I’ll be bumped up quite a bit when it comes to scholarships and acceptance,” Josiah said.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the day of activities originally scheduled for April 7 has been canceled. Students will receive their award by mail and will be recognized on the Hixson-Lied College's social media on April 7. Students will receive a certificate and an original piece of artwork commissioned for the event and created by a School of Art, Art History and Design printmaking student.
