GEAR UP and First National to offer virtual monthly financial literacy workshop

Grand Island Public School’s GEAR UP is partnering with First National Bank of Omaha (FNBO) to offer a virtual monthly financial literacy workshop for eighth and ninth grade parents.

The first workshop will be on February 23, 2021 at 5:30 p.m. The workshop will offer participants tips on budgeting, personal finance, and ways to save money to help your future college student.

Mayra Ortiz Quintana, GEAR UP College Financial Advisor, said this opportunity has been ongoing since last year, and FNBO has been a great partner with GEAR UP from the beginning. The pandemic has led the GEAR UP team to be creative in ways to help the 2024 and 2025 cohorts. GEAR UP is excited to offer this financial literacy opportunity with FNBO.

“As our cohort students grow closer to their graduating year and start to think of ways to make college financially possible, we want to prepare them with all the tools necessary to make their college plans and dreams possible,” Ortiz Quintana said.

The goal of the workshop is to inform parents and students of different ways to budget and ways to start saving for college. Ortiz Quintana said this information is important as the cohort students begin to get jobs of their own and may need guidance on how to manage their money. She said having parents informed will help students with the extra support needed to stay on track.

Parents can sign up here. Mayra Ortiz Quintana will contact parents who sign up and share the Zoom information needed to join. For any questions or help related to the workshop, parents may contact Mayra at mortizquintan@gips.org or (308) 519-5233.
