GIPS to cross 50% mark in staff COVID-19 vaccinations

More than 400 Grand Island Public Schools staff members will receive the COVID-19 vaccine on Friday at Grand Island Senior High School.

By the end of the day, 600-plus staff members, or more than 55 percent of GIPS staff who signed up for the voluntary vaccination program, will have at least received their first dose of the vaccine.

“We want to thank the Central District Health Department for its dedication to ensuring the community has access to the vaccine,” said GIPS Superintendent Dr. Tawana Grover. “Through a comprehensive, team-wide approach, we have been able to provide our teachers with the vaccine. Our staff members are an essential part of helping educate our students and play a significant role in ensuring the economic engine stays strong for the entire community. This will be a historic day for our district and its ability to continue to hold in-person schooling.”

Nearly 200 staff members will receive their second dose on Friday and another 200-plus staff members will receive their first.

Friday is a scheduled prep and plan day for certified staff. The vaccines will be administered between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

CDHD Health Director Teresa Anderson informed GIPS as of Thursday afternoon that teachers had their prioritization upgraded.

“The Central district’s move to prioritize educators in phase 1B demonstrates in action that onsite learning is a priority. GIPS thanks Mrs. Anderson and her team at CDHD for their support in providing the vaccine to our staff so that we can continue to elevate our promise of Every Student, Every Day, A Success!” said Dr. Grover.
