GIPS 2020-2021 Winter Sport Guidelines Released

Grand Island Public Schools plans to have Grand Island Senior High student-athletes competing in sports with family in the crowd for the winter season.

“We are pleased to have our Islander student-athletes competing this winter,” said GIPS Superintendent Dr. Tawana Grover. “Our goal has always been to keep our students in school and we recognize that athletics hold tremendous value. We are excited to see the Islanders excel throughout the winter season.”

All GISH athletic events will be live-streamed through YouTube, Facebook or Striv. Wrestling meets can be viewed on the Facebook page dedicated to Grand Island Wrestling.

“I am proud of the coaches and students for following the GIPS guidelines and protocols to enable them the opportunity to compete,” said GISH Activities Director Cynthia Wells. “Positive competition rounds out the mental and physical aspect and creates a team atmosphere where student-athletes achieve their goals.”

In addition to the 2020-2021 winter season guidelines outlined by the NSAA, Grand Island Public Schools has implemented the following safety measures:

Fans will be restricted to two tickets per athlete in the following sports: wrestling, girls basketball and boys basketball.

Dance and cheer teams will perform exclusively at home basketball games. Cheer teams will not appear at wrestling meets.

Unfortunately, there won’t be pep bands, student sections or concession stands until further notice.

Grand Island stickers have been placed on socially-distanced seats at home venues for spectators in groups of two. Home fans will sit on the South Bleachers and visiting fans will sit on the North Bleachers. Additional stickers have been placed on the bleachers in the East Gym.

With the recent passing of a mask mandate ordinance, it is expected that all spectators, coaches and workers to wear masks that cover the mouth and nose at all times. Student-athletes on the sideline benches are expected to wear masks when not competing.

Parents of swim team members will time events at home meets, but no spectators are otherwise allowed. GIPS staff will not be asked to cover swim meets at the YMCA.

GIPS officials will continue to monitor the situation and adjust the plans accordingly.
