Westridge Blood Drive at TCCC exceeds goal, impacts 162 patients

Westridge Middle School organized a blood drive on Friday, October 2 at Third City Christian Church. The blood drive, which was the second blood drive Westridge has put on in recent years, resulted in 56 lifesaving units of blood from 56 donors. This resulted in 162 patients receiving blood because of the donations.

Westridge School Counselor Nicole Schulte helped organize the event. The school’s first blood drive was in May 2018. The second blood drive was scheduled for May 2020, but was canceled due to COVID-19 concerns.

Schulte said the idea for the blood drive started with a group of students she was leading at school called Targets of Kindness.

“I am an avid-blood donor and donate as often as I can,” Schulte said. “In 2018, I brought up the idea to the Targets of Kindness group as a way for them to host an event as another way to do something kind without getting something in return,” she said.

Schulte said the first blood drive was a huge success, so she worked on a safe plan to organize the blood drive this year at Third City Christian Church.

The goal for the blood drive on Oct. 2 was 45 units. The drive exceeded that goal with 56 units.

Schulte said 22 of the 56 people who donated were Westridge staff members.
