GIPS to provide free meals for students

Grand Island Public Schools Nutrition Services will provide free meals to all GIPS students beginning Monday, Sept. 14.

The USDA released flexibilities that allow Nutrition Services to provide breakfast and lunch free of charge to all GIPS students through December 31, 2020 as long as funding remains available. This is available to both onsite and virtual learning students.

Students must choose a complete meal. Extra items or milk must be purchased if the student does not take the full meal.

Meal funds will remain in student accounts to be used when the free meal flexibilities are no longer in effect. Parents and guardians should add funds to their student’s account if there is a negative balance or if the student would like to purchase milk only or extra items.

Since the free meals are dependent on the funding for the USDA flexibilities, GIPS Nutrition Services and the district will provide advance notice to parents when the free meals will stop.

Meal procedures will not change. Virtual parents and/or students will still continue to bring student I.D. cards with them to pick up meals and to order meals via the online ordering form each week.
