GIPS PE teachers putting on community-wide field day

Grand Island Public Schools elementary PE teachers are inviting the community to join in on this year’s field day, Tuesday, May 19.  The event is being hosted on the GIPS YouTube channel via a Field Day playlist.

Typically, each school’s PE teacher puts together the lineup of activities for students to take part in and score themselves on during the annual school event. Each school has their own plan for the kids.

Not this year.

Like nearly everything else about this school year, field day has had to take on a new look.

“We knew it was going to be altered because kids aren’t in school,” said Leah Michel, Gates Elementary PE teacher. “However, we didn’t want kids to lose out on this day so many look forward to.”

So, Michel and the other nine elementary PE teachers across GIPS put together a plan for a virtual field day.

There are more than 25 events in this year’s field day. Each has a video explanation to be released on the morning of field day on the GIPS website,

Michel said, while the field day is modeled after and designed for their K-5 students, she and the other GIPS PE teachers are hoping all students, adults and community members will get involved, take on the challenges and have some fun.

“This can be a lot of fun for our kids,” she said. “We’d love parents and the community to get involved and attempt the field day challenges, too.”

All of the activities can be done with little or no equipment and will not require anyone to break social distancing guidelines.

For more information, check the GIPS website on the morning of May 19.
