GIPS recognized for wellness efforts with Governor’s Wellness Award

Earlier this school year, Grand Island Public Schools was honored for their efforts in health and wellness. The district was awarded the Governor’s Sower Award at the EHA Safety and Wellness Conference in September.

There are three categories of the wellness award: Sower, Grower and Harvester. The Sower Award recognizes workplaces that have established quality wellness programs.

Robin Dexter, GIPS associate superintendent, said the district has worked extra hard to meet federal wellness guidelines through policy and staff buy-in.

“We’ve committed to healthy snacks, physical activity, and social and emotional well-being, not only for students, but for staff as well,” Dexter said.

GIPS follows the smart snack guidelines, which is used to monitor snacks provided by the district. The district has staff wellness representatives who work to provide activities for staff and students to improve physical and social emotional wellness.

Other wellness examples include staff fitness challenges, such as Newell’s Biggest Loser and GISH Fit at the high school, where staff lost weight and improved their health. The #WeAreGIPS 5k and 1 mile Family Fun Run/Walk was also a product of improving the district’s wellness efforts.

“It’s nice to be recognized by Gov. Ricketts and the state of Nebraska for the hard work that staff, students and parents have accomplished with wellness,” Dexter said.
