‘Elf’ set will take audience to winter wonderland

When Grand Island Senior High performs ‘Elf The Musical’ this weekend and attendees are in for a treat with the set.

The set will take viewers from a winter wonderland in the North Pole all the way to New York City.

Pat Lonergan has been heading up the set construction for productions at GISH for 15 years. He’s at it again this year, but said he has help from a team of people. Lonergan said a few dads come in and help him construct the set, as well as students. Construction started September 1.

Lonergan and the team constructed an iceberg, a revolving door, tall windows and a large clock. Buddy the Elf rides the iceberg and is rolled off stage by a student who hides inside the iceberg. The revolving door is used in the department store scene, similar to the movie “Elf.”

A piece sure to wow the crowd is Santa’s sleigh. The red sleigh, built by Carl Eliason, was made with wood and is big enough to fit Santa’s presents.

Lonergan said he tries to recycle and repurpose a lot of set pieces from the past.

“In fact, the tall walls and windows were actually originally built for ‘Secret Garden’ in the early 2000’s,” Lonergan said.

The GISH Center for Performing & Creative Arts presents “Elf the Musical” Friday and Saturday, Nov. 1-2, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 3, at 2 p.m. Tickets available online at through Thursday, Oct. 31. Tickets available at the door only on day of show.
