Islandaire dancers pass on passion to campers

More than 30 preschoolers through fifth grade girls filled the Grand Island Senior High auditorium with excitement as they learned dance routines at the GISH Islandaire Dance Clinic, Saturday, September 21.

This camp has been put on by the Islandaire dance team for more than 10 years. The camp offers new experiences to girls, as they learn a dance routine as well as foundational dance skills such as leaps and turns.

Students dance during dance camp.Islandaire coach Hannah Luber said the camp is a great way for young dancers to grow through new techniques and styles of dance. She also said dancing with the Islandaires helps the young girls envision themselves in the future.

Irelynn Sughroue, a fourth grade camper from Gates, sees herself on the Islandaires through the lens of her older sister, Ebony, who is a freshman member of the dance team. Irelynn said she enjoyed dancing at the camp because it was exciting and challenging.

“I liked my new dance because it goes so fast.” Irelynn says.

The dancers performed by grade level for each other as well as their friends and families at the end of the camp. The girls were very supportive of each other, clapping and cheering when the dancers performing did exciting moves.

Thirteen Islandaires ran the camp and taught the dancers. Kenzie Zapata, a sophmore Islandaire, said she enjoyed working with the kids and that it was inspiring to her.

“All the young girls are so passionate. Some have never danced before, so it’s fun to see them grow and teach them something I’ve been doing since I was their age.” Zapata says.

The next opportunity for elementary students will be during basketball season with the second Islandaire Dance Clinic.
