Engleman Elementary incident communication

GIPS families,

This week we shared information about allegations of inappropriate behavior by a member of the Engleman Elementary staff. This is a very delicate situation.

While the investigation is ongoing and is in the hands of the police we want to assure you our first action is always to ensure our students are safe. We thank you for trusting us with your students every day. We also want to respect this investigation process, protecting all parties involved. We understand the anxiety this situation has caused parents and staff and appreciate the response we have received from the Engleman Elementary community.

We acted immediately to respond to the situation when it was reported by students, we reported inappropriate behavior to the proper authorities, we removed the employee from the school, we made contact with the parents of the children involved and then we communicated with Engleman staff and families.

Grand Island Police Department will continue to have more access to information on this situation than we do as a district because GIPS is not running the investigation. We will do our best to communicate what we can when we can, but we likely will not be able to divulge protected, confidential information. During an investigation like this, it is typical to have little public communication from GIPD or GIPS. When a decision has been made, the police department will announce whether or not charges will be filed.

Again, we appreciate the understanding and patience shown by our families and staff as this investigation takes place. We are thankful for the work being done by the Grand Island Police Department and Central Nebraska Child Advocacy Center to protect our students.

Dr. Tawana Grover
GIPS superintendent
