Project SEARCH interns to host ‘Reverse Job Fair’

Four Project SEARCH interns will host a Reverse Job Fair on Friday at CHI Health St. Francis from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The Reverse Job Fair will give community businesses an opportunity to learn more about Project SEARCH and the four interns. Project SEARCH, a program that partners with Grand Island Public Schools, Vocational Rehabilitation, and CHI Health, offers high school students with disabilities diverse job skills through a one-year unpaid internship program. Interns do three nine-week job rotations during the year. Five hours are spent each day on the job and 90 minutes are in the classroom learning curriculum material, which includes interviewing skills and finding career interests.

Michella Honas, instructor and coordinator of Project SEARCH, said there are many benefits to the Reverse Job Fair, including on-the-spot interviews, increasing the interns’ confidence, gaining possible resources for jobs, and practicing communication skills to the public.

“In addition, we hope to show that even though these interns have a disability, they can compete with any typical candidate applying for the same job when given a chance to prove themselves in the company,” Honas said.

The four interns who will be at the Reverse Job Fair are about to graduate from the Project SEARCH program and are actively seeking employment. The interns will set up a booth and market their job skills through presentations. They each have unique skills and are hard workers. Their experiences include basic automotive repair, food service, janitorial work, computer and inventory experience, and experience with sterilizing medical equipment.

The Reverse Job Fair will be in Conference Rooms 2 and 3. For more information, contact Michella Honas at or 308-398-5790.
