GISH biology students present research to medical professionals

Grand Island Senior High biology students connected with local medical professionals who evaluated student projects on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Biology teacher Leah Borer said students were asked to research an antibiotic resistance or superbug (bacteria). The groups of students then presented their findings to different local medical professionals who donated their time. The medical professionals spoke with students about the issues they researched, while also grading students on how well they presented and found information.

“This fit in with our science standards, while giving students a real world scenario to work with. Students had to come up with a plan to fight these issues or a way to warn others about it,” Borer said.

The specialists came from St. Francis Pharmacy, the Grand Island Clinic Lab and the Central District Health Department. A local firefighter paramedic also donated time to evaluate student research.
