GISH 2018 Homecoming Royalty

Grand Island Senior High Homecoming is this Saturday, Oct. 13. The big game is Friday, where the King and Queen will be crowned during halftime. This is the first time they've been crowned at halftime - usually it was Saturday during the dance. These 10 seniors represent the drive and passion of our students. 

Abby Hornady

Abby Hornady is the daughter of Ellen and Jason Hornady. She is in the top 2 percent of her class, is recognized as an AP scholar, has been on the academic honor roll each year and received academic letters each year throughout her high school career. She is the public relations officer for student council, a member of National Honor Society, is involved in Future Business Leaders of America, Superintendent of Student Advisory Council, was a GISH tennis player, graduated from Youth Leadership Tomorrow and completed the Camper in Leadership Training program at Cheley Colorado Camps. Abby plans to major in advertising and public relations with a double minor in business administration and psychology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Austin Smith

Austin Smith is the son of Chad and Amanda Smith and the older brother of Emma and Ethan Smith. He is the class president, a head student-athletic trainer, a member of the Ultimate Image Varsity Show Choir, and has participated in the school musicals "Hunchback of Notre Dame" and "Mamma Mia." He is also a goalkeeper for the school soccer team and a member of National Honor Society and Youth Leadership Tomorrow. He is in the top 2 percent of his class and will be a four-time academic letter recipient along with the honor of being an AP Scholar. After graduation, he plans to attend college with a major in biomedical engineering.

Hanna Ghaifan

Hanna Ghaifan is the daughter of Ibrahim Gebeira and Nafisa Toto. Hanna was born in Cairo, Egypt and moved to the US at the age of 2. Hanna has been on the GISH softball team for 4 years. She also will be going into her third year on the GISH basketball team. Hanna loves to dance anywhere and everywhere. When not in school, her hobbies includes going on mission trips in the summer, going to fun church camps, and traveling. She loves to help people in anyway she can and loves to make everyone smile. She plans on becoming a psychologist at an out of state College. She would also love to do missionary work in underdeveloped countries when she is out of college.

Chris Pearson

Chris Pearson is the son of Kevin and Sonja Pearson and brother to Robin and John Pearson. He is about to start his fourth year on the Grand Island Senior High swim team and received his varsity letter in his Sophomore and Junior years. He has won first place in the Nebraska Special Olympics State swim meet for the last two years. You have probably seen Chris working at Hula’s, helping in the east office, and running with one of the flags on the Memorial Stadium sideline after frequent Islander touchdowns. After graduation, Chris hopes to go to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Emma Collins

Emma Collins is the daughter of Doug and Wendy Collins. Throughout high school, Emma lettered all four years as a member of the GISH Varsity softball team and also received numerous honorable mentions from places, including the Grand Island independent, Lincoln Journal Star, and Omaha World Herald. This Summer, Emma was also selected to attend the Rotary Youth Leadership Award program (RYLA) for her leadership potential where she received a youth leadership award. Upon graduating this year, Emma plans on pursuing a career in Pre-Dentistry at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Mikyal Nadia

Mikyal Nadla is the son of Amin and Huda Nadla and oldest brother to Telfon, Liliana, and Nathan Nadla. He has been on the honor roll for the past two years. He also lettered in track sophomore and junior year. He is an active member in the U.S Army National Guard and plans to attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln to study Criminal Justice.

Karla Bermudez-Corona

Karla Bermudez-Corona is the daughter of Luis and Sandra Bermudez. As the oldest in her family, she will be the first to attend a university. She is an active member in Grand Island Senior High Marching Band and the Concert Band, and is a three-year band letterman recipient. She is in JV Show choir, and holds a position as part of the top three students in her class for ROTC as Senior Enlisted Advisor. She has received the leadership award from ROTC as the Recruiting officer for that school year. She is also a member of the musical and participated in student-directed One Act plays. Karla plans on attending the University of Nebraska at Kearney and major in English Education.

Grant Cole

Grant Cole is the son of Lew and Shari Cole. Grant has been an honor roll member during all four years of high school and has been an active participant in the school’s jazz band, wind ensemble, and marching band. Grant is in the top 2 percent of his class and has lettered in academics every year. He is also involved in National Honor Society, and has received recognition for being an AP Scholar with Honor. Grant plans to pursue his major in music education at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

Leavitt Reno

Leavitt Reno is the daughter of Frank and Claudia Reno and sister of ZitaAnne. Leavitt is in the top 2 percent of her class, has been on the academic honor roll throughout her high school career, and is an AP scholar. She is a member of the National Honor Society and is the treasurer of the Grand Island-CPI chapter of the Future Business Leaders of America. Leavitt is a band section leader and has lettered each year for her participation in marching band, wind ensemble, and jazz band. Leavitt plans to attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, pursuing a degree in computer engineering.

Samuel Sims

Samuel Sims is the son of Mark and Andrea Sims. Sam has been on the honor roll all four years of high school, has received an academic letter, and is a member of the National Honor Society. Sam has also lettered in wrestling and football. He has played football all four years and has been on the varsity roster for three of them. Sam plans to attend college to play football, major in biology and obtain a masters in nursing. He intends on pursuing a career in pediatric nursing.
