Mathematics

All students at Stolley Park Elementary will improve understanding of mathematical concepts.

Rationale and Supporting Data

The Stolley Park Elementary staff chose to focus attention on oral and written communication of mathematical concepts as an area of emphasis.  Communicating ideas orally or in writing is a way for students to articulate, clarify, organize and consolidate their thinking, which will facilitate greater understanding. The Stolley Park Elementary staff continues to focus on balancing performance tasks with structured response items, as we feel our students’ greatest need lies in the area of explaining their mathematical thought processes and understanding through oral and written communication.  After researching our data, the areas of algebraic concepts (district assessment) and fluency (ITBS) were in need of improvement.  The professional development that has been provided for fluency will enable staff to focus on the necessary 5-7 minute fluency practice and a daily practice of identifying and applying patterns will enable staff to focus student achievement.

Improvement Strategies

  • Demonstrates understanding of mathematical problem solving strategies through oral and written communication.
  • Use fluency strategies to improve computation and estimation skills.
  • Implement strategies to identify and apply patterns.
