The Starr Elementary Media Center houses approximately 9700 books at all reading levels from beginner to adult as well as a small selection of books for our Spanish language readers.  We pride ourselves on being up-to-date in our intermediate fiction and primary picture books, as well as including multiple copies of the Golden Sower Nominees each school year.   In the Spring our primary students vote for their favorite Golden Sower and our upper elementary readers participate in district-wide online Golden Sower activities.

Scholastic Reading Counts and the Scholastic Reading inventory are tools we use to test students reading comprehension.   By using these, and talking with students one on one, we are able to point students to books not only of interest to them but also at reading levels that will not frustrate, but instead help them succeed and become lifetime readers.

There are 24 eMac computers and 2 intel-based eMac computers in the permament lab within our media center.  Two separate machines allow students to search our library database.   In addition, our Parent Teacher Organization was able to purchase 24 laptops in mobile carts 3 years ago.  These, as well as digital cameras and ipods, are available to classrooms for special projects throughout the year.

Computer applications available include the latest versions of iWorks, iPhoto and garageband, as well as comic life, type to learn, media blender and kidspiration.  Our online teaching links point students to online learning games that are safe, educational and interesting.
