District Assessments

Each spring for the past six years, District Assessments have been given to measure all Grand Island Public Schools students' reading, writing, speaking, and mathematics achievement.  For the 2006-07 school year, this represents over 35,000 individual assessments for students in grades 1-12.  These District Assessments have been designed by Grand Island Public Schools staff to measure how well students have learned the district's curriculum; they represent our best summative measures of what students should know, understand, and be able to apply at a proficient or "mastery" level for each course or grade level.  These language arts and mathematics assessments include a combination of 1) traditional structured response items (e.g., calcuate the correct answer, fill in the blank), which measures knowledge and basic understanding, and 2) performance assessments, which measure how well students can use their knowledge and skills.

ITBS

The Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) and Iowa Test of Educational Development (ITED) were administered in February, 2007 to all Grand Island Public Schools students in grades 3-9 and 11.  These national norm-referenced achievement tests have been given for the past nine years, with a switch to Form A in the 2003-04 school year to better accommodate special needs students.  The ITBS/ITED results are reported by grade level in four areas:  Reading, Language, Mathematics, and Core (the composite of the three subtests).

State Accountability

State school accountability focuses on the performance of all students, providing a broad picture of school performance with a focus on school improvement.  To meet state accountability requirements, schools must have Good, Very Good or Exemplary ratings on the quality of the assessments they use to measure student learning and student performance on state reading and mathematics assessments.
