Newell Elementary School received the Exemplary Reading Program Award. Newell's principal, Brad Wolfe, received a certificate indicating his unique literacy activities make the school a standout in Nebraska. Monthly schoolwide reading celebrations, Words of the Week, and fluency and singing activities are some of the literacy-based activities offered at the school. Only one other Nebraska school, Gordon Elementary School, received the same recognition. Gordon Elementary School was the state winner of the award and was invited to send a delegate to the International Reading Association convention in Atlanta in May.
Frasier received the Celebrate Literacy Award. She retired from her first-grade teaching job at Wasmer Elementary School at the conclusion of the 2005-2006 school year and now lives in Kearney. She has been a member of the Central Nebraska Reading Council for more than 30 years and has held every office in the council.
Frasier received a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in reading/language arts from the University of Nebraska-Kearney (UNK). She has been a primary grade educator, title reading teacher, and media specialist in various public schools. She was a recipient of the Nebraska Teacher Achievement Award from the Peter Kiewit Foundation in 1992 and 2000. She used the grant money to purchase books for the school bookroom.
While teaching in the public schools, she often volunteered her expertise to community resources such as Edith Abbott Memorial Library and Trinity United Methodist Church and sponsored students from UNK through the Primary Literacy Block Field Experience. She was an extremely active board member in Child Care Solutions, which brought planned literacy activities to local daycare providers. She has been a volunteer for the Literacy Coalition.
In addition to her teaching responsibilities, she has been a freelance writer for Frank Schaeffer Publications, and a consultant/contributor for other publications.
She is currently teaching an undergraduate literacy class at the University of Nebraska-Kearney and is working with the Museum of Nebraska Art to improve and promote unit development concerning specific artistic works.
