Robbins receives award from Nebraska Voices for Children

Ben Robbins, a senior at Grand Island Senior High School, has received the 2008 Nebraska "Making a Difference for Children Youth Award" from Voices for Children in Nebraska.

Voices for Children is an independent, nonprofit organization committed to serving Nebraska's children by advocating for their best interests.

Big Brothers/Big Sisters in Grand Island nominated Robbins for the award for his involvement in the organization.

Robbins services on the Big Brothers/Big Sisters Board of Directors and has been matched with his Little Brother, Cody, for more than 14 months.

Robbins is also the student representative on the Grand Island Public Schools Board of Education. He also serves on the Grand Island Community Youth Council and the Governor's Youth Advisory Council, which meets biannually with Gov. Dave Heineman to discuss legislation concerning the youth of Nebraska.

Robbins and his Little Brother participate in activities including bowling and going to the library. Robbins said his Little Brother is a "little reminder of what's important in life."

Robbins has been involved in many high school drama productions, plays mallet percussion in the band, leads the viola section in the high school's orchestra, and is a member of two select choirs. He is chaperone chairman for Student Council and is a member of National Honor Society. During the summer, Robbins helps direct and produce plays presented by the Central Nebraska High School Theater Program, which he founded in 2006.

Robbins was honored at the Voices for Children 2008 Valentines Gala on Feb. 9 in Omaha and also received the award on April 6 in Grand Island.

His parents are Vern and Kay Robbins of Grand Island.
