Newell Elementary School student competes for national martial arts team

Amanda Egbert, a fourth-grade student at Newell Elementary School, was a member of the U.S. National Martial Arts Team that competed against other teams from throughout the world at the 2008 Aloha Goodwill Games in Honolulu, Hawaii, in February.

She was a member of a team comprised of 9-year-old through 12-year-old boys and girls that competed against other teams in that age division, said Brad Wolfe, principal at Newell Elementary School.

Egbert received three silver medals and two bronze medals in the competition. She competed in traditional forms, weapons, sparring self-defense, and board breaking.

Egbert qualified for the national team at a meet last fall in Denver. She is currently a brown belt and is two testing dates away from getting her black belt in taekwondo.
