Pohirieth's program enables the audience to experience the Andean cultures of Ecuador, Bolivia, Peru, and Chile through an acoustic journey and storytelling. The founder and director of the award-winning Lincoln-based Andean musical group Kusi Taki (Quechua for Enchanting Music) will play traditional South American instruments including the Quena (flute), Zamponas (panpipes), Charango (ten-stringed small guitar), and Bombo (goatskin drum) and sing in Spanish and Quechua to bring alive the cultures and history of the indigenous peoples of the Andes.
Pohirieth's presentation is part of Travel Around the World Day at Barr Middle School. In the afternoon, sixth-grade students will interact with local people from the community who have immigrated or lived in another country. Students will be exploring the question, "How does where you live influence how you live?"
The presentation is made possible by the Nebraska Humanities Council and Barr Middle School as part of the Nebraska Humanities Council Speakers Bureau. The Nebraska Humanities Council receives support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Nebraska Legislature, the Nebraska Cultural Endowment, and private donations. The program is one of approximately 300 programs offered through the Nebraska Humanities Council Speakers Bureau. More than 165 speakers are available, making it the largest humanities speakers bureau in the nation.
