GRAND ISLAND —
The Grand Island school board did not ask for any changes in a proposed 2008-09 budget that will see a slight decrease in the levy.

Grand Island Public Schools business manager Virgil Harden said the levy decrease is totally due to the $71.1 million increase in district valuation for the coming fiscal year.

That is a valuation increase of 3.11 percent. That was enough to drop the levies for the district's bond funds and for its qualified purpose undertaking fund, which is used for designated purposes such as asbestos removal and improvement of indoor air quality.

The total levy for 2008-09 will be $1.197 compared to last year's levy of $1.21.

The district's general fund -- which Harden said likely accounts for about 90 percent of what the school does -- will remain at $1.05, the same as last year.  Full Story
