G.I. Education Foundation schedules news conference

The Grand Island Education Foundation will have a news conference at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, at Starr Elementary School to announce the results from the fifth annual “Add it Up to Opportunity!” staff and board member fund drive.

The news conference will be in Starr Elementary School’s gym at 315 Wyandotte Street.

Last year, staff and board members of Grand Island Public Schools and Education Foundation raised $51,176 for the benefit of school district students. Nearly 800 donors participated.

Proceeds from the campaign were used to expand Foundation programs such as the Academic Aristocrat Scholarship program and the Teacher of the Year program. The funds were also used to support Foundation operations and endowment and a Classroom Mini-Grant program. During the 2007-2008 school year, the Foundation awarded 13 mini-grants to classrooms across the district that provided 1,739 students with additional educational opportunities not available through the school budget.

This year’s campaign included a $5,000 challenge gift from the Vern and Esther Taylor Charitable Trust. This challenge gift was used to match all new and increased staff gifts to the campaign. The campaign ran from March 31 to April 25.

Foundation Director Traci Skalberg said each year she is “amazed at the response of the teachers and staff of the Grand Island Public Schools. They really come out and show their commitment to students through this campaign.  It really is above and beyond the call of duty.”  She called the campaign “over-the-top and a source of pride for Grand Island.”
