Second Grade News

Our 2nd graders have become experts at raising bugs!  Some of our meal worms have become pupas and adults.  We were amazed when our caterpillars became cocoons and then Painted Lady butterflies.  When all of them hatched, we released them so they could live and be free.  Our milkweed bugs have grown bigger and bigger and are red now.

We were pleased to have so many children score proficient on their writing assessments.  The end of the year activities have included writing letters, persuasive letters, and directions for how to make or do something.

The second and fifth grade classes participated in an Arbor Day presentation by Brody Burrow’s father, Barry Burrows.  He planted a Ginko tree on the west lawn and reminded us all about the importance of trees.  We appreciate the plaque that Mr. Burrow’s made to help us remember Arbor Day at Newell.

We are excited about the fun summer reading program at our city library.  The theme this year is “Catch the Reading Bug”.  Newell students who participate will be invited to a FREE swimming party before school starts in the fall.  Of course, we are hoping that Newell wins the city library’s traveling trophy for reading the most books over the summer.  We know our second graders will do their best to read, read, read this summer.

A big thanks to all of our families for the encouragement and support you have provided during this school year.  Have a wonderful and safe summer!
