Notes from the Nurse

With summer quickly approaching, outdoor activities are in full swing.  Here are just a few safety tips to keep your kids safe and healthy in the months to come.

ALWAYS wear a helmet when riding a bike.  Even if you’re only riding your bike in the driveway.  Never ride in the street or go between parked cars.

Wear sunscreen.  Wearing sunscreen can help protect you from the damage of the sun and reduce the risk of skin cancer.  Use a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, which offers protection from UVA and UVB rays.

Protect yourself from insect bites by using a safe and effective insect repellent.  Read the label on the can/bottle to see if it is safe to use on children.  Wearing a light jacket or long sleeve shirt and wearing socks can also be helpful in preventing mosquitoes, gnats and chiggers from biting you, especially at dusk.

Be active this summer!  Play outside, jump rope, go swimming, ride your bike and go for walks with your family.  Limit TV/Video game/Computer time or at least have equal “active play” time.
