What a great place to be!

Last fall I witnessed an extraordinary scene in the media center. It was twelve O'Clock noon. The fifth grade students in Mrs. Dahlstrom's class had completed their checkout. Small groups were scattered throughout the room. Some sat with their legs crossed on the new couch and chairs. Some were stretched out on the colorful blue-patterned area rug. Others lounged on the back jacks or sat hunched over at tables. All were deeply engrossed in their new books. The bell rang, but quiet continued in the room. Finally, Mrs. Dahlstrom said, "For any of you that are interested, that is the dinner bell!" Slowly the students got up and worked their way toward the door, noses still buried in books. Mrs. Tolen and I marveled that fifth grade appetites for food took second place to their appetites for reading.
