Quiet Reading in the Media Center

News from the media center for October

When you enter the media center this fall, two things will stand out: the large number of new books on display and the media center lab with all flat screen computers.  Our school district repurposed computers in all of the buildings and provided Newell with the newer computers to complete the lab of 25 computers.  This project began last year with a purchase of 11 flat screens by our P.T.A.  The P.T.A. provided four new large screen computers for our lab this year, which are excellent for viewing and working with graphics.

With money from our building budget, the P.T.A. and a gift from Wal-Mart, we were able to purchase $7,500 worth of new library books for the new school year.  Our students and teachers are quite excited at the wide variety of titles that we now have... everything from Step-into-Reading books for our emerging readers, to several sets of fiction books by popular chapter book authors.  Drop in and see the 35 beautiful new EyeWitness books on display.  Some of the many topics in this series, that is known for its incredible graphics, are inventors, mythology, dance, religion, and crime and detection.

Our summer reading program was a success with 51 students completing the challenge of reading so many minutes per week.  We had an enjoyable evening at the Island Oasis Water Park celebrating our commitment to reading.  We appreciate the volunteers that helped to check out and shelve the library books.  You were a great team!
