Knickrehm History

1957 -The site at 20th and Oak Streets was purchased for $3750.00 from Mrs. Carl Knickrehm
1965 -After a school bond issue passed, design architect, John Smutz, proceeded with preliminary plans.
1965 -Johnson Builders of Salina, Kansas was awarded the contract. The 19,250 square foot building's total cost was $290,565. ($15.10 per square foot)
1965 -A groundbreaking ceremony was held at the site.
1966 -The school was named for Carl Knickrehm, who had been a grocer for many years and later was in the real estate business.
1966 -When school started in late August, the building was not ready, so the first few weeks of         the 1966-67 school year were spent at West Lawn School. When the building was completed, the students, teachers and parents marched from West Lawn, led by the Walnut Junior High band, to the new school. The enrollment was 194 students. The new flag was raised and the ribbon was cut by Ruth Dietrich, a granddaughter of Carl Knickrehm. The new school featured a media center, seven classrooms with folding walls, an office suite, gymnasium, and a covered play area under the future addition's roof.
1966 -Students and staff march to Knickrehm and the opening ceremony.
