Reading

Improve all students’ reading comprehension.

Rationale and Supporting Data

The Jefferson Elementary School staff has been involved in implementing and making changes in the teaching of reading in order to increase student achievement.  Guided Reading has played an integral part in this process.  Introducing a variety of comprehension strategies to children also gives them many tools to be able to derive meaning from text.  Students have also been given more direct reading contact hours to practice skills while gaining the love of reading.

Improvement Strategies

Ensure a thorough understanding of Guided Reading processes and components.
Investigate and implement The Daily Five by Boushey and Moser which fosters literacy independence in the elementary grades.
Increase reading comprehension through summarization strategies which enhance understanding.
Increase methods of providing feedback to students while setting clear objectives.
Provide opportunities for parent involvement in reading outside the school day.
