A group of 5th grade students competed in the America Answers Spring Quiz Bowl Competition on May 6. The contest is an online trivia contest that asks questions from a variety of different subjects. Way to go, Ayza, Riley, Nathan and Dillon! Catch the Reading Bug! That is the theme of this summer's reading program sponsored by the newly remodeled and expanded Edith Abbott Memorial Library. Also, the library will have its book mobile at Capital Heights pool on Thursday mornings and then in the afternoon, it will be stationed at George Park. Did you know that the library has a section dedicated to the Golden Sower Award nominated books? Get a head start on the Golden Sower Club by picking up a few of the titles nominated for next year's school year. Congratulations goes out to 24 Engleman students who have earned a Golden Sower pass to Camp Augustine. This year's group of ten books had realistic problems and obstacles that the characters had to overcome. Students in grades 3-5 who qualified to attend this event were challenged at an obstacles course on May 7. Those students participating were Jacob Sattley, Alexis Kleint, Riley Ostdiek, Logan Bell, Nathan Maginnis, Riley Jenkins, Erika Saddler, Maggie Reed, Jacob Wilson, Erin Schleicher, Dakota Rader, Calvin Hehnke, Blaine Morrow, Ellie Westerby, Brendan Barnes, Regan Ostdiek, Abigail Huggins, Cody Shunkwiler, Nicole Schade, Blake Gustafson, Mallory Woods, Faith Schleicher, Alec Redwine, and Eshan Sood.

Counselor's Corner
The school year is drawing to a close which brings us to summertime. Here are some ideas to help make your children's time off school safe, fun, yet productive.
- Establish a routine of reading each day. This could be independent reading, shared reading with an adult or older sibling, or a read-aloud by a parent to the entire family. (Read-alouds on long drives help to pass the time.)
- Know where your children are and with whom they are spending time.
- Require your children to wear a helmet when riding a bicycle or skateboard.
- Have them take swimming lessons.
- Teach them how to do a new job around the house. Rather than just telling them how to do it, demonstrate the steps. That way they will understand how to do it and the quality you expect.
- Provide healthy snack options for your children. Take advantage of summer's fresh fruits and vegetables.
- Limit television watching and video game playing. Encourage activities which provide exercise and do some as an entire family.
I've enjoyed being a part of your children's lives this past school year. Enjoy your summer. Hope to see you in the fall.
Mrs. Jones

Kindergarten
May is here already! It seems like it was just yesterday the children were coming for their first day of Kindergarten. The Kindergarten teachers would like all the parents to know what a privilege it has been to be able to teach your children this year. It has been a rewarding time for all of us. This month is still packed with lots of learning experiencesDuring science, we will be looking at our adopted tree and how it is changing during the season of Spring. We will also be learning about how and why trees and plants need earth materials to live (soil, sun, water, and air). We will be talking about what happened to our caterpillars and how they ate and grew, created a chrysalis around their bodies and in a short time became painted butterflies. Sending them out into the world was a wonderful experience. Maybe they will be in your backyards this summer! We will continue to see how people live around the world, how people communicate, learn, eat, and play together during Social Studies. In Math, we will be talking about and experimenting with weight and balancing. We will be working with more, less, symmetry and time.As usual, we will continue to read, journal and spell in language arts. The final Kindergarten DIBELS test was administered on May 5th. Thank you for making our year so special. Remember to practice over the summer vacation the skills the children have learned their Kindergarten year. Please take time to read to your children and have them read to you! Have a great summer!
Mrs. Bohling, Mrs. Carlson, Mrs. Schmitt

First Grade
Thanks for a sensational school year! We have enjoyed working with each and every child. We are proud of the growth they have made this year. Please be on the lookout for the assessment reports mailed home. We will be looking forward to the annual first grade spring picnic on Friday, May 16th, 10:45 a.m.-1:15 p.m. We will be walking to George Park. On this day the students need to bring a sack lunch, including a drink. Parents and family members are welcome to join us. A reminder note will be sent home closer to the picnic date.
To promote a strong beginning to second grade, we highly recommend that your child read consistently during the summer. Students will only maintain their reading level if they continue to practice what they have learned. Your child's participation in the summer reading program sponsored by the Grand Island Public Library is encouraged. Have a wonderful summer.
Mrs. Brown, Ms. Kenny, Mrs. Rasmussen

Second Grade
May is here and we are celebrating having all our district assessments completed. The year has gone by very quickly but we still have a lot of curriculum, as well as fun, activities to finish. In science we observed the life cycles of the meal worm, painted lady butterfly and the milkweed bug. Be sure to have your child report to you about their observations. Social studies will now be our main focus.
Our stories in our final reading theme are about lending a hand and making a difference in our communities. Please continue to have your child read for his/her B.R.A.G. folders because there are treat incentives for 15 nights of 10 minute readings. In math we will collect data to investigate real-life situations and work with function machines. We will also use fractions as part of everyday life, such as doubling and tripling recipes and measuring to the 1/2 and 1/4 inch.Field Day was May 9th at George Park. Our second grade picnic is scheduled for Thursday, May 15th at the Capital Heights Park. We will walk to the park, eat lunch and play, returning by 2:30 p.m.
We have enjoyed your children this year and hope you have a wonderful, safe summer. Be sure to read!
Mrs. Logue, Mrs. Willrich

Third Grade
Law Day was May 1st! Third graders attended a "mock" trial of Goldilocks and the Three Bears at the Hall County Courthouse. Goldilocks was found guilty on two accounts. A date to set on your calendar is our third grade picnic, May 20th! We will walk to George Park to eat our lunch and have some fun before the last day of school. Third graders will leave for the park around 11:30 a.m. and return to Engleman about 2:30 p.m. The end of our school year is fast approaching. We still have a lot of learning left! Please continue reading at least 20 minutes each and every night and work on those multiplication facts.
Mrs. Barnes, Mrs. Ehlers

Fourth Grade
It's hard to believe the months have rolled by so fast, and it is already May. Fourth graders will continue their study of Nebraska history with traveling the Oregon Trail, learning about Nebraska from territory to state, and discussing all the interesting facts about our state Capitol and govern-ment. All of this knowledge will be taken to Lincoln on May 14th as we visit the Capitol, State History Museum, and the Nebraska football stadium. In Math we will finish the year working with probability.Language Arts will include a technology Keynote project where the students will incorporate poems of different genres that they have written. This project will end with a BYOP (Bring Your Own Poetry) Party, as we share our projects with each other. This has been a fast year, and we, as teachers, have enjoyed working with your children. We hope to send them off well prepared for fifth grade. Have a safe and fun summer!
Miss Leth, Mrs. Usrey, Mrs. Weaver

Fifth Grade
It is hard to believe that the end of the school year is already here. Fifth grade students finished their last district Math assessment the first week of May. Results of all of the district assessments, I.T.B.S., and CogAT testing will be sent home with the students or mailed to the parents. In Math we are finishing our unit on number patterns, primes, and fractions. Our last unit for the school year will deal with using fractions. We are currently in our last module of Science. We are working with levers and pulleys and learning to understand how simple machines can make our work easier. We are also learning how to adjust those levers and pulleys to provide a "mechanical advantage". We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those parents who helped throughout the school year. With-out that help, our children would not have had some great learning experiences!
Mrs. Campbell, Mrs. Ellis

I want to take this opportunity to THANK each and every one of you for your acceptance, your friendship, your cooperation and understanding of our traffic patterns and crosswalks here at Engleman. It has made my responsibility as Engleman Crossing Guard a very enjoy-able and rewarding experience. The entire Engleman Family is, without a doubt, the best in the city.
I have purchased a home in a small community near Lincoln and will be moving there shortly after school is out this spring. It was a difficult decision to decide to move, but with this Engleman building closing, the time seemed right and it will now put me closer to the University activities which I truly enjoy, and Bryan LGH, where my cardiologists practice.
The past, I believe it is six years now, have been a wonderful experience for me, an experience that I will cherish as long as I live. THANK YOU to each and every one of you and I certainly hope to see you whenever I have the opportunity to return to the Grand Island area or when you are in the Lincoln area.
Sincerely,
John H. Primrose, Crossing Guard
