Listening for Lions
Listening for Lions Student Project Possibilities:
Verbal/Linguistic
Create a series of six or more poems that reflect the feelings and emotions of the story. At least one must include the point of view of Rachel, Valerie, Grandfather or Kanoro.
Visual/Spatial
Design an illustration series of six or more animals that are mentioned in the story. Be sure to include detailed background which reflects the home of the animal, such as lion in Africa. At least two media types must be explored, example watercolor, pen and ink, charcoal, collage, etc.
Logical/Mathematical
Create a timeline of eight points from Rachel’s life outlined in the book, paraphrase the points.
Use a Venn Diagram to compare life in Africa to life for Rachel in England.
Create a timeline of events that have happened since 1919. At least ten events must be described with information about how that event has changed today’s world.
Naturalist
Start with observation of birds that you see in your neighborhood. Create a bird watching journal in which you can track sightings, include illustrations or photos, and perhaps even record sounds. Track at least five different birds that you are able to identify. Additional information could include nesting information, male/female color patterns, migration, etc.
Musical
Record birds in your school neighborhood using Sound Studio or Garage Band. 1) Use those recordings to compose a song which is at least one minute long and creates a feeling that is created in the story. 2) Use those recordings to create a soundscape for your school that allows others to appreciate the sounds of nature as much as Rachel enjoyed her time outdoors and is at least one minute long.
Bodily/Kinesthetic
Stage and film an iMovie that is at least two minutes long and includes related dialogue from the story. The movie must set the scene and include two or more characters.
Intrapersonal
Create at least ten journal entries of Rachel that reflect her life after the end of the story. Include what would happen two years later, five years later, ten years later and twenty years later. Be sure to include information about her family, work and love of the outdoors.
Interpersonal
Investigate missionary hospitals of Africa. Design a service learning project that you could perform that could increase awareness or enhance the quality of the life for people of Africa. Sites for Missions-
